The Pro version comes with a soft floor roller you can insert into the floor head instead of the carpet brush. I was pleasantly surprised at how much it picked up on hard floors, which is a rarity for stick vacuums without a soft roller.
It’s similar to the Bosch Serie 8 cordless vacuum we reviewed last year and better overall than the cheaper Vax Blade 4 but it lags behind the Dyson V8, V10 and V11. Surprisingly, it was better with shorter five and seven-inch strands but struggled with nine-inch hair. The “comfort” mode, in particular, makes it much easier to manoeuvre than your average cordless stick vacuum. Finally, I was impressed with the 11 mins 43 secs I got out of the HX2’s battery on full power; it falls slightly behind the performance of the HX1 in this regard but by less than 30 seconds.For people who are familiar with vacuum cleaners, Miele is a known brand, particularly with bagged canister vacuums. However, by dismantling the vacuum and switching to handheld mode, with nothing attached to the suction inlet, the Cheerios raced into the collection bin. It also comes in an Infinity Grey Pearl finish, to inject a bit of style into your cleaning routine. If you keep it in cordless stick mode instead, you have the handle in the right place and can simply disconnect the extension wand and it’s ready to go. After initially looking like it was going to snowplough the Cheerios ahead of it, I set the suction to Max and it proved powerful enough to drag the Cheerios underneath.
Like most cordless sticks, you can arrange it as a simple handheld device for tackling stairs, furniture and cars. Cleaning performance compared with a Miele Complete C3 cylinder vacuum cleaner (SGEF3) with STB 305-3 turbobrush (dust pickup from carpet and hard floor with crevices, fibre pickup from carpet). With the vacuum fully assembled and the powered brush head, wand, handle and motor unit all connected, it weighs 4kg, which is considerably heavier than the Dyson V11’s 2. It only has a traditional brush roll, and while Miele says it’s “multi-floor,” I wouldn’t recommend it on hard floors. But with suction-only tools, those figures go down considerably to more bearable levels below 80 decibels.
On hard flooring, most vacuums struggle to roll over these big pieces, pushing the majority out of the way and that proved to be the case with the Miele.The coffee grounds experiment may say otherwise, but the eye test reveals it picked up most of it and didn’t leave visible trace particles. It’s a clever design, although the girth and gloss of the various components meant it felt a tad slippery to handle at times and I found it awkward to reconfigure the various bits without dropping them on the floor.
