Evil Dead Rise’ 4K UHD Blu-Ray Review - Geek Vibes Nation ‘Evil Dead Rise’ 4K UHD Blu-Ray Review - Geek Vibes Nation

The Dolby Atmos mix for Evil Dead Rise is bold and balanced from the opening and continues on as such straight through the film. There is strong use of the overhead speakers for atmospherics and discrete sounds, movement of sound effects through the surround channels, clear dialogue, and deep low end. The Supplements Lee Cronin owes Fede Alvarez a drink. The question of just how do you reboot a beloved horror franchise, and do it well, has already been thunderously answered by Alvarez’s astounding 2013 Evil Dead, meaning Cronin, the talented writer/director behind the stylish Hole in the Ground (2019), had a tried and tested blueprint to follow. And follow it he did.

‘Hocus Pocus’ Cast Returns to Salem for a Special 30th Anniversary Celebration [Event Report]

Instead of focusing on the one man-god Bruce Campbell or somebody similar, Evil Dead Rise follows a single mother named Ellie who has three kids and is all living in a soon-to-be demolished high-rise apartment. The tattoo artist's money isn't rolling in, which is where the kids try and make any money they can to help out. Ellie's sister Beth comes to visit when an earthquake rattles Los Angeles and creates a hole underneath their high-rise. One of the children explores the hole and finds a crusty old book, some ancient artifacts, and some records, which of course, invite the horror to come.

Seems like all the latest entries of beloved horror franchises are taking a holiday. A trip away from home to recharge the batteries if you will. And with Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead being at home in those woods, there’s only one place to head for a break…the city. Starring: Mirabai Pease, Richard Crouchley, Anna-Maree Thomas, Lilly Sullivan, Noah Paul, Alyssa Sutherland, Gabrielle EcholsEvil Dead Rise was shot in the anamorphic format with the Arri Alexa Mini LF using Panavision G-, T-Series, Ultra Panatar and Ultra Speed MKII lenses in ARRIRAW (4.5K). A 4K digital intermediate was utilized and the film comes to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in a 2.40:1 HEVC 2160p HDR10 encodement. From New Line Cinema and Renaissance Pictures, the film also stars Morgan Davies (TV’s “The End,” “Storm Boy”), Gabrielle Echols (“Reminiscence”) and introducing Nell Fisher (“Northspur”). The film was produced by longtime franchise producer Rob Tapert and executive produced by series creator and horror icon Sam Raimi and cult legend and “Ash” himself, Bruce Campbell, along with John Keville, Macdara Kelleher, Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Romel Adam and Victoria Palmeri. And so Lee Cronin’s fifth entry starts off exactly where you would expect it – in a cabin. In the woods. And its one of his few stumbles in an otherwise brilliantly propulsive, claustrophobic and brilliantly bloody take on the classic Deadites. While there’s nothing wrong per se with the cold open here – it feels VERY Sam Raimi both in terms of its execution and its unbridled glee at the bodily carnage being meted out - it’s a clunky plot beat that actually bears no real link to the main story. While obviously a clear nod to Deadites past, it feels too much like a safety blanket, almost as unsure as some of its audience in the upcoming change of scenery and it contributes to the film’s only real issue – it’s pacing in the first act. Shot digitally on the ubiquitous Arri Alexa Mini LF and a 4.5K native image to produce it’s 4K Digital intermediate from, this release from Studiocanal has a fantastically solid foundation. It produces a native 3840 x 2160p resolution image in a theatrically accurate 2.39:1 aspect ratio that also utilises 10-bit video depth, WCG and HDR10 only, all of which has been encoded using the HEVC/H.265 video codec. Evil Dead Rise is directed by Lee Cronin, starring Lily Sullivan (“I Met a Girl,” TV’s “Barkskins”) and Alyssa Sutherland (TV’s “New Gold Mountain,” TV’s “Vikings). For his first big main feature film, Lee Cronin is assisted by Rob Tapert, Bruce Campbell, and the Raimi brothers in making sure this Evil Dead Risemovie is scary, bloody, and gobs of fun while introducing new characters and settings. Usually, these films take place in a remote cabin with adults looking for a small romantic getaway. With this new sibling successor, the location is transported to a condemned high-rise building in Los Angeles with young kids the primary focus of the ensuing carnage. These elements haven't really been fully explored before in this realm, but Cronin keeps its pacing tight and the horror at an all-time high throughout the movie. The cast does a great job with the delivery and physical demands that these roles bring. Especially the role of Ellie who is put through the ringer from start to finish. And for those that are looking out for Bruce Campbell - that wish will be granted in a pitch-perfect way that might cause this film to be in a multi-verse of sorts. Evil Dead Rise is a fun, horror film with rivers of blood, carnage, and scares. It's a worthy addition to the franchise that sets up more films. Hopefully, the next go-around will examine the dark comedy that these films have delivered so well before. From here, survival is the word as demonic possession, decapitations, bodily dismemberment, and more gory murders are seen. And if anyone knows how gross the Evil Dead franchise can be in terms of blood, guts, flesh, and muscle - there is no shortage of any of those things on display in Evil Dead Rise. The family dynamic and the three kids are all enjoyable to watch and are not the usual comedic tropes. They all have something a little different to their characters. Things that seem more natural and realistic in this day and age. The gore is practical and fantastic, which will delight the horror hounds completely, and there is never a shortage of it. Plot: What’s it about? Video: How’s it look? Audio: How’s it sound? Supplements: What are the extras? The Bottom Line Plot: What’s it about? Evil Dead Risecomes to 4K with a 2160p UHD 4K transfer with HDR enhancement. This is a visually stylized movie with many dark contrasts and low lighting levels to perfect that haunted and demonic look. It succeeds in those arenas where other movies might fail. EVIL DEAD RISE is produced by long time franchise producer Rob Tapert (Ash vs Evil Dead, Don't Breathe) and executive produced by series creator and horror icon Sam Raimi and cult legend and "Ash" himself, Bruce Campbell. That native image lets us have some really sharp details, with even the finest of textures clearly visible, even through the gloom of the apartment. The intricacy of the make-up – especially in the eyes – is perfectly captured, as is the viscera of the corpses, both the live ones and the dead ones, the darkness of the setting not handicapping the sense of detail in any way.Disappointingly, this release comes with no bonus features. The only thing supplied is the Movies Anywhere digital code and the film on both 4K and Blu-ray. The Final Assessment I was actually mostly skeptical with Evil Dead Rise from the trailer. We’re long gone from a weird cabin in the woods and deadites coming out of the ground. Instead we shifted to a grungy apartment in Los Angeles where a mother is turned into a deadite and tries to go full demon on her family. It just didn’t FEEL like an Evil Dead movie at all from what I could see. But at the same time the red band trailer was intriguing and I was proven wrong once more.
