If Jesus, the Son of God, needed to go to His Father in prayer for strengthening and guidance, how much more do we (Psalm 32:6)?

A Love Letter from God - Psalm 91 A Love Letter from God - Psalm 91

Colossians 3:1 tells us to “seek those things which are above, where Christ is.” In verse 5 we’re told to put to death the passions that come from below—"fornication, uncleanness, passion, and evil desire.” Then the Lord added the sin of greed or covetousness to the list, calling it idolatry. When the apostle Paul wrote to his young pastoral protégé, Timothy, he told him to show “integrity” in doctrine, to be incorruptible in belief and in actions. Paul wanted Timothy to hold fast to the truth of God, not allowing himself to be divided. A person of integrity obeys the whole counsel of God every day, in every circumstance. Daniel’s three friends in Babylon demonstrated integrity when they were threatened with being burned alive (Daniel 3:16-18). They told the king they would not divide their allegiance, that they would maintain their faith in God and His promises. That is integrity. Such is the picture David paints with his words in Psalm 32—a drought of spiritual vitality brought on by his own sin. When he failed to confess his sin to God, his “bones grew old” and he groaned “all the day long” (verse 3). It was like his soul was being evaporated by the heat of his own guilt and shame. But then the rains of grace came and David confessed his sin and God forgave him (verse 5). And he encouraged his readers not to make the same mistake he had made (verses 9-10). To first-century leaders in the Roman world, the imagery was familiar: A victorious Roman general returning from battle leading his soldiers and their captives into the city. Citizens lined the streets applauding while the aroma of celebratory incense filled the air. Paul uses that image to say that Christ leads His followers in a victory procession through every difficulty in life (2 Corinthians 2:14-15).

A leper approached Jesus and said, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” Jesus touched the man, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed”—and he was healed (Mark 1:40-42). When you are brokenhearted, I will draw close to you (Psalm 34:18) and cry with you (John 11:35). I’ll collect all your tears in my bottle and record each one in my book (Psalm 56:8). Like a shepherd holding his lamb, I’ll carry you close to my heart (Isaiah 40:11). I’ll comfort you in your time of sadness (Matthew 5:4), turning your mourning into gladness (Jeremiah 31:13) and your weakness into strength (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). I will put a happy new song in your mouth (Psalm 40:3) and give you a beautiful new name (Isaiah 62:2). Peter wrote his final letter shortly before his execution. He wasn’t discouraged; he was looking forward to the future. He spoke of “looking forward to these things.” and “[looking] for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13-14).A great misconception carried by many Christians has to do with the location of heaven. The word heaven itself implies that our eternal destiny is somewhere “up there” in the heavens. But the Bible says our eternal destiny is earthly, not heavenly. As Peter wrote, we look for a “new earth in which righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13). I will never stop loving you. And as long as you seek forgiveness, as long as you repent, as long as you ask me to be in your heart and life and believe that my Son died for you—I will forever be within you—guiding you, filling you, moving you forward in hope and joy.

You may not know Me well, but I know everything about you ( Psalm 139:1). I know when you sit down and when you stand up ( Psalm 139:2); I know what you do and when you do it. I am familiar with all of your ways ( Psalm 139:3) — every hair on your head is numbered ( Matthew 10:29-31). You were made perfectly in My image ( Genesis 1:27), My offspring (Acts 17:28), a child of the Most High God (Galatians 3:26) and heir to the throne (Romans 8:17). I knew you and loved you before your conception (Jeremiah 1:4-5), and chose you when I planned creation (Ephesians 1:11-12). You were never a mistake ( Psalm 139:15-16) as all your days are written in the Book of life ( Psalm 139:1516).

Listen to James Finley explore lectio divina through the writings of the monk Guigi II on the Turning to the Mystics podcast.Temptation. Whether we realize it or not, it is part of our past, and it will be part of our future. The moment we resolve to stand strong and walk away is when temptation grows most intense. That is why Scripture is of paramount importance. God's Word contains the answer to resisting temptation before it's too late. Consider these verses: Look to Jesus as he carries his cross to Calvary Hill and as he’s crucified to forgive us of our sins and reconcile us to God, our loving Father. This is the perfect, unfailing love that we long for! In Jesus and through his death and resurrection the heavens are truly opened to us! Repeatedly I’ve deepened my appreciation for God’s love by going to the cross of Christ. I do this with you in my booklet of Gospel stories, meditations, and prayers: Unforsaken: With Jesus on the Stations of the Cross. One day when I was busy working with my hands I began to think about our spiritual work, and all at once four stages in spiritual exercise came into my mind: reading, meditation, prayer and contemplation. These make a ladder for monks by which they are lifted up from earth to heaven. It has few rungs, yet its length is immense and wonderful, for its lower end rests upon the earth, but its top pierces the clouds and touches heavenly secrets. [1] My Child, if you seek Me with all your heart…you will find me (Deuteronomy 4:29). Delight in Me and I will give you the deepest desires of your heart ( Psalm 37:4), after all, it is I Who gave you those desires to begin with (Philippians 2:13). I am able to do far more than you could possibly imagine (Ephesians 3:20).I am your greatest encourager (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17), the Father Who comforts you in all your troubles (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). When you are brokenhearted, there I am…close to you ( Psalm 34:18). Just as a shepherd carries his lamb, so have I carried you (Isaiah 40:11). Do not worry, for one day I will wipe away every tear from your eye (Revelation 21:3-4), every pain you’ve suffered (Revelation 21:4). I will compensate you for all that’s been lost ( Matthew 19:29). In all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility.
