All these characters were well written with their own quirks and problems. Though sometimes the characters may make you want to tear your hair out and curse them for staying in problematic relationships, these guys are teens. And teens are very good at not listening. Not twenty-two.’ It’s imperative to shut her down before she utters my age. I don’t know how I got to be forty-four. Clearly I’d my eye off the ball but, a bit late to the party, I’m trying to airbrush away all references to it. It’s not just the fear-of-dying and, worse, the fear-of-becoming-jowly, it’s because I work in PR, a dynamic, youthful sector, which does not value the ‘less-young’ among us. I’ve bills to pay, I’m simply being practical here. This is a heart-wrenching, yet deeply satisfying and inspirational memoir on finding meaning and love. Levy spent years traveling the world and telling women’s stories. When she experiences unthinkable heartbreak, she must come to terms with the fact that, like all of us, she lives in a world she cannot control. She shares with readers how she began to live again in the face of uncertainty and in spite of pain. And I liked the actual idea for the book. I think it was great and I think it could have really been great.

BREAK is a story about a family, each of is broken in very different ways. It's a difficult book to read on many levels and a brilliant book given that Hannah Moskowitz was still in high school when she wrote it. I know the speech and could do a word-perfect recitation, but closing her down when she’s in full flow is next to impossible. (My siblings and I like to joke that her husband TPB – The Poor Bastard – developed spontaneous mutism shortly after their wedding and that no one has heard him speak for the past twenty-one years. We insist that the last words he’d ever been heard saying – in tones of great doubt – were ‘I do . . . ?’) It’s unrelenting and it’s horrific and it was hard to put down. Even the “bad guys” aren’t all bad when you know how they got here.The "voice" in this book is exceptional. The pace of the story is fast and intense. One thing that I took away from this story was the devotion the brothers had for each other.

And below the surface of the story, shared memories and metaphors link their two minds, as MacLaverty shows how decades of intimacy work to mingle consciousnesses as well as experience, and yet how far we remain unknowable to each other. Gut, dass es einen Stammbaum im Buch gibt. I was incredibly disappointed we never found out why Will cried so much. This aspect of the story played such a huge part that it should have gotten a bit more attention in the end. The author, Katherena Vermette, however, did a nice job exploring a story about familial dynamics and Manitoban women. This is not a subject I had read about previously and I appreciated the insight.

This wasn’t a happy book and I wouldn’t say that I had a connection to any of these characters but I did have a connection to the story in a whole though and it did open up my eyes and showed me how it is to live in a neighborhood like the one described in this book. I appreciated that she put a voice to them. For that I have hope. After a breakup, we often reflect on the things left unsaid. When Lydia is found dead in a lake, her parents are reeling from the loss and the pain of the things they never told their daughter. This book explores the challenges of trying to truly know someone and our struggle to understand one another.

Moskowitz has a poet’s sensibilities in her tight, terse sentences, choosing every word for its merit rather than the beauty of its sound as it rolls off the tongue. If you have a sensitivity for the “F” bomb (which the writer uses with regularity), Break might turn you off, but understand that her choice to include such language is completely in alignment with Jonah’s character. The dialogue is true to type, and honest in its presentation. More compelling is the fact that Moskowitz wrote Break from an entirely male perspective, while she is female, not a small feat in any literary undertaking. Deadbreak by Jorge Sanchez squarely fits the mold for zombie action stories.
