Even though Mario does not appear in New Super Luigi U, his cap appears in the opening cutscene where he was sitting in New Super Mario Bros. U.

This small decision has significant consequences, that all lead to this hat. Across the decades since Mario’s introduction, he has worn a variety of hats with special properties. In 1988’s Super Mario Bros. 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Raccoon (ahem, Tanuki) Cap allowed Mario to take flight. In 1996/97’s Super Mario 64 the Flight Cap granted a similar ability. It appears Mario owns multiple caps, as Mario is also seen wearing one when he is trapped within his painting. Cappy is both friendly and helpful to Mario during his journey. Cappy is shown to be bold, as he is passionate about rescuing Tiara from Bowser. Contrarily, Cappy is shown to be slightly timid and easily startled at times. Cappy is also talkative, as he frequently provides Mario with advice and sometimes information relating to the current location. A design based on the Mario Cap is used in the logo of Nintendo's current rewards program, My Nintendo. The Mario Cap is also seen in the logo of the previous rewards program, Club Nintendo.

The people can be a little too serious for their own good, but if you see an open door, it means you're welcome. As well as the usual yellow coins, some of which you lose if Mario dies, each World also features 50 or 100 purple coins, unique to that world. In the Wooded Kingdom, for instance, they look similar to nuts, as in nuts and bolts rather than assorted nuts. Coins of both colours can be spent in shops, but purple coins buy World-specific items: themed outfits for Mario to wear and items to decorate the Odyssey. Mario can use these outfits to gain access to yet more Moons, but really these items add additional charm oto an already incredibly charming game. In the Animal Crossing series from Animal Crossing: Wild World onward, the Mario Cap appears as a headgear item. The item is called " big bro's hat" (" Mario hat" in Animal Crossing: New Horizons), in reference to Mario being the older brother of Luigi. A variation of the first six notes of the Ground Theme from Super Mario Bros. plays when it is put on.There are loads of fun minigames waiting for you to discover, with different games in each kingdom! Take aim at the top, set new records, and maybe even win some prizes… Cappy's default form is a large white top hat with magenta eyes, but he is actually a small, spectral being. Cappy can take the form of different hats, including Sombreros. Cappy's large eyes appear across all of his different appearances.
