About this deal

The Coronation is a royal ceremony taking place to crown Charles III the new King. The occasion is sure to be one of the most remarkable royal celebrations we will ever experience in our lifetimes. A service will be held in which the new King will take an oath and have St. Edwards crown placed upon his head by the Archbishop of Canterbury. This moving ceremony is just one of many events planned for the upcoming Coronation weekend. You should not need a risk assessment – as long as consideration is given to the safety needs of all those attending, common sense precautions should be enough. While the official ceremony will take place on Saturday 6th May, an extra bank holiday has also been confirmed for Monday 8th May. This is in addition to the bank holiday already in place on 1st May, giving us plenty of time to host celebrations (providing the weather stays dry). The Coronation Ceremony is a solemn religious service that has been held at Westminster Abbey for the last 900 years.

With the coronation of King Charles III taking place this Saturday (6 May), many of us are preparing to host (or attend) street parties or garden gatherings, to make the most of the long bank holiday weekend. Hundreds of activities are planned for the day by local community groups, organisations and charities including The Scouts, Royal Voluntary Service, National Trust and RNLI. Further details and ways to take part will be announced shortly. On Sunday May 7 a spectacular Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle will showcase the country’s diverse cultural heritage in music, theatre and dance. One of the highlights of the concert will be “Lighting up the Nation”, in which iconic locations across the UK will be lit up with projections, lasers, drone displays and illuminations. The centrepiece of the Coronation Concert, ‘Lighting up the Nation’, will see the country join together in celebration as iconic locations across the United Kingdom are lit up using projections, lasers, drone displays and illuminations. When hosting, you must make sure children are kept safely away from vehicles (unlike an official street party, a street meet means the road will still be open) Organising a Coronation street party of your own is actually much simpler than you might imagine. Anyone who wants to hold a street party is welcome to do so any time during the bank holiday weekend, from Saturday 6th May - Monday 8th May. While it's helpful if one person takes charge, the idea behind a street party is that the whole road is involved in the planning and organising, and it brings the community together.

The first documented coronation at Westminster Abbey was that of William the Conqueror on 25th December 1066. This May, King Charles III will be the 40th reigning monarch to be crowned.

It might seem like a daunting task to try and cater for your whole street, so we’d suggest asking everyone attending to contribute by bringing their own speciality dish or drink. That way, you’ll have a wide spread and it’ll cater to everyone in your community, from vegans and veggies to cake-lovers. The Coronation Big Lunch, at which neighbours and communities are invited to share food and fun together, will take place across the country on the same date. On Monday, 8th May 2023, members of the public will be invited to take part in The Big Help Out, which will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas.
