About this deal

That's where cameras like the TG-6 make a lot of sense. You can take it places where you're worried you may drop or break your phone, and having an actual flash, along with ring light capabilities, make it a much better tool for macro shots. Detail of Art Effects: Soft Focus Effect, Pinhole Effect, White Edge Effect, Frame Effect, Star Light Effect, Blur Effect, B&W Effect, Pict. Tone Effect, and Shade Effect. Lastly, the TG-6's host of close-up features not only allow for capturing subjects 1cm (0.4") away: the 'digital microscope' mode lets you zoom in up to four times more, though with a reduction in image quality. Olympus sells a ring light and flash diffuser to add flexibility to your macro photography. There are dedicated Macro and Underwater modes on the dial, and a large number of Scene modes too. You can capture images with a natural look, or with artistic filters applied. If you enable Raw capture, you can add filter effects after the fact, right in camera.

The TG-6 is no replacement for a GoPro, but it captures 4K video that looks good, though it does lose some wide-angle coverage due to a crop. It tops out at 30fps, but you can switch to 1080p and record at 60fps or 30fps, and 720p at 30fps is also an option. All of these settings are cropped, and the camera omits a 24fps recording option. If you want to get closer to the look of cinema films, you can switch to the 25fps capture rate used by PAL systems.

When the following setting is On, the Date Stamp function is turned off. The Date icon on the monitor disappears. (The Date Stamp cannot be set to On in the menu.) When the mode dial is already set to (Microscope mode), press the arrow pad Left button to select other sub modes.

When the mode dial is already set to (Underwater mode), press the arrow pad Left button to select other sub modes. There’s also in improved rear LCD screen - it now boasts an improved resolution of 1040k-dots across its 3-inches. You can get a bit more image quality by setting the aperture to f/2.8. The average improves (2,218 lines), and the edges of the frame show decent clarity (1,828 lines). There is also an f/8 option, but it's not an actual aperture setting—instead, it activates a 3-stop neutral density filter.

I select auto ISO, but I set the maximum ISO to 1600. I don’t want the ISO to go any higher than that because of the noise issues. Other users who tend to be on the clumsy side - such as children - might also be considered as a potential recipient of a camera like this. Especially those that are unlikely to already be toting a smartphone for their snaps. There are 8 ISO settings available on the Olympus TG-6. Here are some 100% crops which show the noise levels for each ISO setting for both JPEG and Raw files. JPEG The reason why so many people are excited about the Olympus Tough TG-6 is the impressive list of technical specs.

A lot of competition still exists in the compact camera market, despite the ever increasing threat of smartphone cameras. Indeed, shoot with the TG-6 side-by-side with one of the latest and greatest smartphones and you’ll probably find that the smartphone beats it in a lot of scenarios. Crucially, however, there will be some scenarios that your smartphone just can’t be used in - such as underwater. You also don’t need to worry about breakages or damage, which it makes it suitable for rough-and-tumble action photography.

Accessories

Although the Olympus TG-6 gives you what appears to be some advanced modes, it’s worth noting that these are limited. Aperture priority for example actually only gives you three apertures to choose from - f/2.0, f/2.8 and f/8.0. There’s also no shutter priority mode or manual mode, so you won’t be able to set the shutter speed yourself. If your television supports HDMI control, you can operate the camera using the television's remote control. In the camera settings, select "On" for "HDMI control".
