About this deal

It wasn’t only about the words themselves, but how the words spoken in sequence at the right depth of feeling became bridges between emotion and experience. Between audience and stage, between venue and crowd. Between the day that everyone in attendance had brought into the room with them, and the prospect of the night to come. When the connection is made, everything is linked and moving towards a moment of mutual feeling, a creative connection that binds the entire room into a unified present. In 2013, aged 28, they won the Ted Hughes Award for their work Brand New Ancients, the first person under the age of 40 to win the award, [37] and was selected as one of the 2014 Next Generation Poets by the Poetry Society. [38] I was always me on stage,” they say, “but I was hiding who I was, including from myself … When I perform I go to the depths; beyond gender, beyond body. I leave everything behind. That’s why it was addictive.” a b Isherwood, Charles (14 January 2014). " 'Brand New Ancients' Stars Kate Tempest in a Tragic Tale – The New York Times". The New York Times . The book draws on Tempest’s twenty years’ experience as a writer and performer, electrifying audiences and readers alike. a b Donadio, Rachel (6 March 2015). They were determined to succeed as a performer. But being so visible came with its own set of challenges. Suddenly they were “she” and “her” in the press; nominated in the best female category. Interviews could feel treacherous. It’s not that dysphoria ever went away, but with all eyes on them, Tempest didn’t know how to engage with it. Neale, Matthew (16 November 2019). Kae Tempest [3] [4] (formerly Kate Tempest) [5] [6] is an English spoken word performer, poet, recording artist, novelist and playwright.a b c " 'Mercury nominees 2014: Kate Tempest". Guardian Music Blog. London. 22 October 2014 . Retrieved 6 February 2018. Tempest won the 2013 Ted Hughes Award, was nominated for a Costa Book Award and a BRIT Award, has been shortlisted for the Mercury Prize twice and was nominated for two Ivor Novello Awards. They were also named a Next Generation Poet by the Poetry Book Society, a decennial accolade. Drawing on two decades of experience as a writer and performer, Kae Tempest champions the role of creativity — in whatever form we choose to practice it — as an act of love, helping us establish a deeper relationship to our true selves, and to others and the world we live in. In October 2020, Faber published Kae’s first work of non-fiction, On Connection, a “sonorous, humane polemic, advocating the values of sharing, authenticity and creativity over the heightened individualism, competitiveness and consumerism that dominate our society today… a powerful remedy and an urgent call for change.’ I enjoyed the personal anecdotes and references to Kae’s career and personal life the most, but I found myself bored by the more self-indulgent ramblings.

This is a book about connection. About how immersing ourselves in creativity can help us cultivate greater self-awareness and bring us closer to each other. Tempest's song "People's Faces" was used for the Facebook commercial "We're Never Lost If We Can Find Each Other", created by the agency Droga5, and released on 9 April 2020. I have the impulse of doing the same with "On Connection". Carry it with me, correlate its values with my life, really work through it. I probably can't and won't carry it around with me everywhere (can I tho) but I for sure will read it again and again. It already had a very real impact on my life and I'm curious to see where it leads me. Everybody Down was nominated for the 2015 Mercury Music Prize and Let Them Eat Chaos have been nominated for the 2017 Mercury Music Prize. Their accompanying poetry book Let Them Eat Chaos was nominated for the Costa Book of the Year in the Poetry Category in 2016. They were nominated as Best Female Solo Performer at the 2018 Brit Awards. Gardner, Lyn (10 September 2012). "Brand New Ancients – review BAC, London". The Guardian . Retrieved 15 September 2012.

Join Tempest as they reflect on the nature of creativity and connection in conversation with comedian and writer Athena Kugblenu, broadcast from our Royal Festival Hall. The book also reveals the darker side of Tempest’s fame: while “running from gig to gig four nights a week”, they developed nodules on their vocal cords, stopping them from speaking or performing until they could be operated on. Tempest says that they were a “teenage runaway, a school dropout and a drug dealer”, sleeping in churchyards “with my best mate and his heroin addiction, or allowing myself to get in a car with a 50-year-old stranger who bought me beer and cigarettes because I let him touch me”. It was creativity, they write, that saved them. Kae’s album Let Them Eat Chaos was released in 2016, alongside a volume of poetry of the lyrics (Picador), and was also nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and the Costa Prize for Poetry, respectively. Their third album, The Book of Traps and Lessons, was released in 2019 and nominated for the Ivor Novello.

Helder verwoord, krachtig uitgewerkt, nergens pedant of belerend en steeds met oog voor falen en het recht daarop. En niet half zo zweverig als mijn laatste zin van de vorige alinea leek. :) waarvoor excuus.
