About this deal

Despite being first published more than 20 years ago, this book remains relevant to contemporary person-centred counselling practice. Many cutting edge topics are included such as discussions about human nature, multi-cultural awareness and time-limited practice. The book invites readers to engage deeply with how they might honestly ‘live the theory’ of the person-centred approach.

Tony Merry died in 2004, and this third edition has been updated, with a new chapter on recent developments, by Sheila Haugh, a long-time colleague who knew him and his work well.

This is a rigorous, faithful and trustworthy book for those wanting to learn more about a person-centred way of being.

Tony Merry's second edition of Learning and Being in Person-Centered Counselling stands out as impressively comprehensive, accessible and skilfully condensed. It brings theory to life with its suggestions for exploring and developing person-centred values, qualities, attitudes and skills. British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (2018) Ethical framework for the counselling professions. Clearly, I believe in Carl Rogers' theories, otherwise I wouldn't have spent the past four years training in his style of counselling, but he was ultimately a scientist and some of his theory does get a tad complicated for my non-scientific brain. He was author of several books and articles on counselling, including Learning and Being in Person-Centred Counselling. Learning and Being in Person-Centred Counselling has inspired and guided thousands of counselling students since it was first published in 1999. In the second edition of this hugely popular book, Tony Merry reorganised and updated the text to include the latest initiatives in the world of counselling and psychotherapy. In 2020 the third edition was updated by Sheila including a new chapter on recent developments in Person-Centred counselling.
