About this deal

Switch, Xbox Series X and PS5 all sport a native 720p resolution, but anti-aliasing (AA) quality differs between all three consoles, notably in MGS2 where PS5 offers the most thorough treatment of rough edges.

The original Metal Gear Solid in the Master Collection plays it very safe, with no differences playing it between PS5, Series X, Switch or PC due to a straight emulation approach handled by developer M2.The quality of the games have been well documented for over 20 years; we all know they're all-time classics but that's not what this review should be about imo. Except that application isn't just for the extra bits and pieces at all because you’ll find another version of Metal Gear in there as well as Metal Gear: Snake's Revenge. Yes, the quality of the originals was always going to be there, but surely the quality of the package as a remaster should have more weight in the verdict.

the picture is soft and you will not see much of a difference playing the ps3 hd collection on a modern tv since your tv will do the upscaling to 1080p anyways. The good news is that the Master Collection also includes the North American NTSC version as an optional download if you select English US, which does provide the smoother 30fps cap, meant for a 60Hz container. The original 1998 Metal Gear Solid plays via emulation in the Master Collection release, with the same 240p resolution and 30fps cap. Looking at Switch too, it's a shame 30fps is enforced for these PS2 classics with frame-rate drops below this target as well. It's likely an incidental benefit of running either game from SSD-equipped modern consoles, but it's a clear plus. I'm not expecting every console to hit a 4K resolution in the Master Collection, but offering some option in this vein seems appropriate for PC, PS5 and Series X given the power on tap. It's a really messy way of structuring the collection, because it doesn't really feel like one at all. There are omissions of course, but it would have been enough if each game had been ported to current-gen consoles with the love and attention they deserve - but sadly, this isn't the reality. For starters, it probably no longer even exists so that would mean adding a considerable amount of new code.

A more expansive remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is on its way, but for now we have the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection, which makes the first three classics playable on modern hardware once more. Which is what the release was originally intended to be, as a result they took the platinum trophy away from the ps5 version of lost legacy.
