About this deal

You soon whittle down your wants and settle on your actual needs', she doesn't assume that all her readers are cyclists. Registered as a charity in England and Wales charity no: 1147607 and in Scotland charity no: SC042541. I've read a lot of similar books and what distinguishes this from the others is that it doesn't get repetitive at all, and it's as if you are with her on her epic journey. One doesn’t have to be a cyclist, a fan of the sport or even know anything about a bike to enjoy this book. She’s chasing a goal to be the fastest woman to circumnavigate the world on a bike, and we get the privilege to accompany her on her adventure.

At the end of the book, she admits that writing has never been her forte, indeed it's never appealed.Using his laptop, Tom eventually managed to download half the world on to a SIM card that I then plugged into my Garmin GPS. Jenny holds the female world record and her story is badass, listening via audiobook is highly recommended - Jenny narrates in her lovely Scottish accent, and it includes actually clips from her audio diaries she recorded on the ride. Having had a cycling adventure only slightly less epic than Jenny's I had been looking forward to hearing her account of her record breaking ride; and I was not disappointed! It's almost five years since Jenny Graham pedalled her Shand Stooshie away from the Brandenburg Gate in Germany to attempt a record-breaking, self-supported round-the-world ride.

Her encounter with a bear was truly terrifying, and I was pleased when she attached a significant number of noisemakers to her bike to let any would-be animals know she was barreling down the road. These would act as shelves and together with my bars, they would carry my essentials: my lights, a camera, a huge elastic hair band to stuff things under, my GPS Tracker, two water bottle cages with bottles, two wired speed sensor computers and my main GPS navigation tool – the Garmin Edge 1000. Along the 18,000 miles over 16 countries, we get a glimpse of what it’s like to sleep in desolate areas, fight through storms, mend gear, deal with unsavory locals, and narrowly make checkpoints as she strives to make it to the finish line on time. She rarely breaks away from the flow of the journal, and when she does, it's normally in recognition of something that has positively impacted her life and/or the challenge. Such a raw and honest account, of not only a brutal and physical challenge but also the emotional roller-coaster it was.

She does talk about her relationships with family and friends, but the real people aspect of this book is her interactions with those from other countries and cultures. An inspiring memoir about fulfilling a childhood dream and becoming a record-breaking, round-the-world-cyclist. I used a variety of different methods to trick my brain into sitting still and being productive on a screen. The prospect of a book might well have been more overwhelming to her than that of circumnavigating the globe on two wheels, without any support. It’s applicable to so many endurance sports and anytime one is starting off on a new unknown adventure with a big dream (such as starting a start-up for me!

Cycling UK offers a range of cycling-related services to support and advise our members, the wider cycling community and employers. But despite the trials, Jenny's wonderful character shines through, making this very honest but wonderfully entertaining account of her trip. Graham drove herself mercilessly to maintain a daily scheduled distance, and described the psychological battles she fought to keep pedaling, even when she fell ill.
