Thor and Loki of the Aesir are well known, but a full further family of Gods, the Vanir, exist, as well as numerous planes of existence, and other mythological creatures. the acknowledgment of these people’s brutality and the horrible nature of their world (slaves, rough conditions, social mores that limited so many).

Het eerste deel van het boek ( De Schepping van Midgaard) geeft een beeld van de maatschappij, met nadruk op de religie, de rollen van de mannen en de vrouwen en de omgang met de doden.

The author states that there is not much a written record some much of how society function has to be reconstructed from Archeology - of which he is university professor is Sweden.

Far from a dogmatic approach to considering history, this book looks at a particular topic with ambiguity, examining multiple points of view, and how they interact with the written and archaeological record. Ignore that frightened girl he brought home with him--that's just to be expected, and anyway she can't even speak the language; and he does keep looking at you. As vivid as it is learned, as thrillingly cutting edge as it is deep-rooted in the distant past, this is as brilliant a history of the Vikings as one could possibly hope to read. Up to 7% of men and up to 37% of women had been malnourished as children, in central Sweden in the Viking Age. It might be my favorite Viking nonfiction of all time (and that's saying something as this is one of my niche time periods). And ending the book is a kind of summation of the influence this phenomenally active and successful force in the world.Be it a single Buddha statue found in the Helgo treasure or a runic monument left by a woman, who went to travel to Jerusalem, material culture can tell so many stories if we are there to listen.
