About this deal

If you’re like me, and apparently incapable of rolling anything greater than a 7, you’d be delighted to know that these cards are for you. There definitely aren’t as many games that include so many players successfully, so hats off to Unstable Unicorns. Taken for what it is – a light, fun and interactive game that you can teach to almost anyone, I don’t hesitate to recommend Here to Slay.

Don’t let the fact that the game came from Kickstarter put you off, the entire campaign was run to perfection and you can tell that from the moment to open the box, with a small magnetic clip to open the lid and the plastic moulding around all the cards and dice, plus the artwork is to die kill for! Like its spiritual predecessor Unstable Unicorns, Here to Slay is a highly interactive game in which players will be doing everything in their power to get ahead by tearing other players down at the same time as advancing their own boards. There’s not a lot of risk riding on a game purchase like this, so if it sounds interesting to you, I say go for it and you won’t be disappointed. There’s no pressure of course, but every penny helps to keep this site running, as I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages). Modifier cards can be played on your turn or an opponent’s turn to raise or lower roll values, while challenge cards are played in response to an opponent and cause you both to roll the D6s.

It’s the same art style and quirk that Unstable Unicorns has and I enjoy with it’s own game play mechanics that make the game different. The second condition on the monster determines if the kill is successful or not, the monster will have a value required to kill it, along with a value which can result in bad things to happen to that player, anything in between has no effect. If you’re lucky enough to have these two new classes in your army, you are able to unleash the ‘Druid/Warrior Challenge’ cards.

At higher player counts (I’ve also played at four), it’s much more likely that there will be enough interaction in circulation that anyone getting too far ahead early on should be pinned back by one of the other players. Here to Slay makes a great gift for any game lover, and is one of Pop Insider’s best geeky gifts of 2020! Here to Slay is a competitive role-playing fantasy strategy card game that’s all about assembling a party of Heroes and slaying monsters (and sometimes sabotaging your friends too) from the creators of Unstable Unicorns. It’s an entertaining blend of Unstable Unicorns’ set collection and ‘take that’ elements, with some RPG style dice rolling and monster bashing thrown in. I tend to remove and separate the expansions and place them in to their own containers, then save the game to reload for future use. This includes a special box, unique hero and leader cards, exclusive item and magic cards, and a dice tower. Thankfully, Here to Slay brings a bit more control to the proceedings, with the beautifully cute creatures here – rather than simply being put in play to fill a ‘stable’ – forming RPG-style parties and slaying oversized monsters. Versus another similar card which gave a simple +3 (which is already very broken) with the same limit of 6, which was way too easy to get.

Turns proceed and players scrap over each other’s sets before eventually, someone hits one of the win conditions and ends the game. Each monster has a difficulty score to beat if you want to defeat them, and a lower score that if you fail to exceed will lead to you actually losing something. There’s a lot of space given to the artwork – which you can understand, given how nice it is – but it would have been nice if more attention had been paid to making the cards a little more clear to read in terms of their in-game benefits. When activating an ability, you have an RPG-style difficulty score to meet or exceed by rolling two 6-sided dice. This is the funniest part of the game, screwing over your friends and stopping them from winning the game. However, I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi. Combine Warriors and Druids with Berserker and Necromancer to fully immerse yourself in a cut-throat, adorable game. Speaking of those monsters, they’re a less cute collection of nicely designed creatures that come with powerful effects if you slay them, though there’s also a detriment in most cases if you roll under a specific target number. You choose a party leader – who imparts a pretty powerful bonus throughout the duration of the game – deal a hand of cards to everyone, turn over three big monsters and off you go.
