About this deal

But along the way Rosemary and her friend John must do some clever sleuthing, work a little magic of their own, and—not least— put up with the demands of a very haughty cat.

The balance works well; the fantasy parts about wishing magic, summoning spells, and rainbow magic blending smoothly into everyday life. The Los Angeles Public Library still has the first 1955 American edition of “Carbonel, the King of the Cats”, so I have not seen the new 2004 NYRCC edition. I would have liked it better if Carbonel was a more likable character - but he was really aloof at best and sometimes pretty mean. For writing, like visual art, it's a tough road - a lot of people give up before they get there - but it exists. Both are magic, of course, and Rosemary learns that she can talk to animals while holding on to the broom (which can also fly).Rosemary may have never travelled in a chauffeur-driven car, but neither had John ever been trusted to prepare himself a simple meal before. The loveable rogue witch of the first two books is sidelined and we have the not quite fully thought out (in more ways than one) Miss Dibdin, and the based on the Snow Queen in Narnia Mrs Witherspoon.

This is a nearly perfect read-aloud for younger children in a family setting - that is, one-on-one or in small groups of mixed ages, when the listeners are ages 4 to 8 years old. Incidentally, “sides to middling” for those who are baffled by the term, is a way of prolonging the life of sheets of very fine quality such as linen. Her first children's book, Carbonel, which was to become the first of a trilogy, was published in 1955 and has remained a firm favourite with younger readers. Con la ayuda de su amigo John dedican sus vacaciones a conseguir todo lo necesario para deshacer el malvado hechizo. This is the story of Rosemary, a young girl who decides to help out her financially struggling mother by secretly offering her services as a cleaner during her summer holidays. Book 1 was better, but this was good enough, and will work well for an adult reading aloud to children ages 4 to 7, probably.
