About this deal

For example, Theosophy, among the most popular, sought to reconcile the spirit with the natural and scientific worlds, and many artists embraced it: Kandinsky, Mondrian, Kupka, and Arthur Dove all studied Theosophy; none of them, however, ever publicly suggested their canvases were the expressions of any consciousness other than their own. Published to accompany the most widely reviewed exhibition of 2018—with major features in more than 30 major outlets, including The New York Times, Washington Post, The Economist, Artforum, Hyperallergic, New York, the New Yorker, the BBC and WNYC—this is a "gorgeous book," according to Vulture's Jerry Saltz. The American critic Hilton Kramer wrote: “Hilma af Klint’s paintings are essentially colored diagrams. Vivien Greene has been a Guggenheim curator since 1993 and specializes in late 19th and early 20th century European art with concentrations in Italian modernism and international currents in turn-of-the-century art and culture. But then, as Julia Voss reveals in her new biography, Af Klint started to receive messages from another world – and her life in this one was irrevocably altered.

Around the age of seventy, Hilma af Klint began to separate the documents and artworks she would preserve from those she would destroy. A week after I saw [af Klint's paintings], their pulsing loveliness remains undimmed in my mind, like a self-replenishing sense memory of summer. When Swedish artist Hilma af Klint died in 1944, she left behind more than 1,000 works that she had kept largely private during her lifetime. Laura Stamps is curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at Kunstmuseum Den Haag and has previously worked at KM21 Den Haag. The canvases are massive and their idiosyncratic shapes, squiggles, and colors provide the viewer with an overwhelming sense of wonder.Fer has also curated numerous exhibitions, such as the recent show of Gabriel Orozco at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh in 2013.

GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM PUBLICATIONS Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future Edited with text by Tracey Bashkoff. The recipient of the 2011 Bard Center for Curatorial Studies Award for Curatorial Excellence, in 2021 she received a Guggenheim Fellowship and in 2022 she was awarded The Clark Art Writing Prize.Although they never met, Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian shared a deep dynamic connection to the natural world and began their careers as landscape painters. Despite her many notebooks, she left behind no personal diaries, and we know little about her thoughts beyond her art and spiritualist interests. It is widely accepted now that well before painters like Wassily Kandinsky or Kazimir Malevich claimed to have invented abstraction, she had been painting in that mode for several years—first in small formats and then on an enormous scale. She most recently organized the exhibitions Italian Futurism, 1909–1944: Reconstructing the Universe (2014) and The Avant-Gardes of Fin-de-Siècle Paris: Signac, Bonnard, Redon, and Their Contemporaries (2013). Bauduin, Daniel Birnbaum, Briony Fer, Vivien Greene, David Max Horowitz, Andrea Kollnitz, Helen Molesworth, Julia Voss.
