About this deal

Clive Hallet is a freelance design consultant and a senior lecturer on a post-graduate course in Fashion Management at Northmubria University. You can read pages and pages about a fabric’s qualities, but nothing is quite so telling as touching a swatch!

With accompanying information on fabrication, weights, construction, as well as yarn windings the book will help student fashion designers to make informed textile choices based upon an understanding of raw materials together with the processes that make up a fabric.

Clive Hallett is an associate lecturer in design management at The London College of Fashion as well as lecturing at several other fashion colleges. The pictures from fashion designers showcase the range of different garments that can be achieved when taking advantage of the properties of different fabric types. The book will be useful for anyone who works with fabrics and is the ideal companion to the Fabric for Fashion book.

abstract = "This easily navigable resource provides over 100 swatches of the most recognised and widely used varieties of fabric, including cottons, silks, wools and linens, to encourage consideration of not just the aesthetic appeal of various fabrics but also their structure, feel and weight. There are plenty of photos illustration both the fibers before they're made into fabrics as well as the steps they go through during processing. Also steph from cake patterns sells little swatch books sometimes when she brings out a pattern that are marked with the fabric weight etc.I am lucky enough to have a first edition of this book, so I don’t need to be in the drawing, but I want to say that I love having it on hand and have used it countless times to check the difference of fabrics. Natural fabrics such as cottons, silks, wools and linens are included, as are a wide range of manmade ones including alternative plant fibres like bamboo and hemp.

The samples are a good size, giving you a true impression of their feel, weight and structure and all have a description alongside them. This updated version of the bestselling Fabric for Fashion: The Swatch Book, includes additional swatches, new close-up photography to show fabrication, yarn windings as well as finished fabric swatches and more! Even more cottons can be found in the Introduction where cottons are mainly used to describe different weaves and knits. The last section of this book displays a step-by-step process on the working techniques behind modern and classic fabric manufacturing.
