About this deal

In the first sentence of his book, Jolyon Maugham – the anti-Brexit KC best known for clubbing a fox to death – achieves a mean feat. whatever one thinks of Brexit – in 2016, I canvassed against it – this broader campaign aimed to overturn a major democratic vote.

Personally, I do, and have admired Jolyon Maugham since hearing him speak in person during the Remain campaign. I think the public role of Maugham and co has changed post - 31st January 2020, even if their personal loathing of Brexit has not. Viewed with an open mind, this book is not political but does cover politics and holds it to account using the rule of law. For that reason, this book deserves to be taken seriously, because the ideology underlying it is disturbing and dangerous.A judge who comes from a demographic that makes them close to a “feminism of privilege” (apparently, being older and female? The founder of the Good Law Project details how ordinary people can achieve legal justice in a system which often seems stacked in favour of the rich and powerful, in this inspiring and illuminating volume. I've read better-structured books than this, and am not sure about the right balance between the personal and the political. His new “book”, Bringing Down Goliath, is a tedious, almost unreadable combination of Pooterisms , delusions of grandeur, and descriptions of his tweeting — intermixed with rambling thoughts.

Maugham would presumably point out that his instrumentalism is distinct because Maugham is not an authoritarian. After former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s landslide victory in 2019, Maugham describes how GLP turned from the political to the environmental space. In 2022, together with ClientEarth and Friends of the Earth, GLP scored a big win when the High Court ruled that the government’s net zero strategy was unlawful. Our legal system often feels like it only works for the rich and powerful - for those who know how to use the courts to enforce their will and defend their interests. They are still fundamentally non-politicians who probably feel much more comfortable interacting with their friends and peers. It lays bare some of the litigation that gets little meaningful unbiased reporting in the mainstream media; a fact that is troubling.

Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item.Critics say the declaration unfairly demonises barristers doing their job and is an empty gesture from lawyers (like Maugham, a tax specialist) who aren’t asked to prosecute climate activists. I really hope at least one and preferably all 3 of his big projects to fruition and I look forward to seeing more actions. The “real problem” which diversity must solve is changing the sort of judgments that come down, so that judges take the “political context” into account in the way Maugham likes.

It has been ably taken down for its absurd lack of substance by Yuan Yi Zhu’s coruscating review in The Times . In particular, the chapter on the PPE procurement scandal is breathtaking, even for those of us who thought we knew the facts. His work is worth taking seriously, not because it has any scholarly, literary, or other value (it is precisely as awful as Zhu’s review describes), but rather, because beneath the many, many layers of accumulated idiocy, Bringing Down Goliath represents an ideological attack on the foundations of the rule of law. His insight into the Uber business model is insightful, nuanced and draws effectively on his own expertise. I studied electrical engineering at collage and would prefer to work within the electrical industry, however I am open to anything and am willing to learn and know I will have to start at the very bottom and work my way up the ladder. And I think the antidote to that actually is in giving people means by which they can respond, by which they can come to feel hope, by which they can recover agency over what has been done to their communities.
