About this deal

Deftly moving from psychological horror to splatter, it mixes the staple of any Batman narrative (that is, the idea of solving a mystery, the mark of the detective story) adding an element of science fiction and biological warfare. If he just projected this image to the criminals that is one thing, but even in the moment when he is alone with his thoughts he is the same. I'm waffling whether to give it 1 or 2 stars, but it left a bad taste in my mouth, despite some sparks of creativity. It used to be Batman, but something far more frightening than a mere man stalks the shadows—and it's after Gotham's villains. As he gathers clues, his trail eventually leads him to Killer Croc, and to a discovery that will change everything he thought he knew about his reptilian foe.

Other comics Ennis has written include War Story (with various artists) for DC; The Pro for Image Comics; The Authority for Wildstorm; Just a Pilgrim for Black Bull Press, and 303, Chronicles of Wormwood (a six issue mini-series about the Antichrist), and a western comic book, Streets of Glory for Avatar Press. Ennis and Sharp have to work together again eventually because this has just about everything I love in my comics. But now something far more frightening than a mere man stalks the shadows—and it’s after Gotham’s villains.Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Batman has been the subject of many changes, many interpretations (and, also, reinterpretation), a necessity given its long – seemingly unending – life. A decidedly more cynical and grim take on the character, it also takes Batman back to his roots as "The World's Greatest Detective", with more of an emphasis on mystery and suspense than on super-heroics. Or maybe, the bizarre shift in tone will feel less abrupt once the series is collected into a trade. I would have been a bit dissapointed in this book, but I did not have great expectations for this book anyway. Some sort of unstoppable “Reptilian” monster is wandering around Gotham brutalizing Batman’s enemies. Outside of an admittedly perfect opening scene, set on the steps of the Gotham City courthouse - in which our Dark Knight administers some deserved rough justice to a celebrity who had just escaped a few felonious assault convictions due to obvious corrupt and/or extralegal means - this graphic novel quickly spirals into a big but also thankfully brief quagmire. His attitude towards criminals comes off the same as a rich person who is inconvenienced by someone less fortunate. The story is set within Gotham City with Batman following the tracks left behind by a cruel and unforgiving freight train of a monster who happens to only be hunting down the villainous powerhouses of the criminal underworld, such as Penguin, Riddler, Poison Ivy, and so on. Yes Batman is a dark character, yes he uses fear as a weapon, but in this book he comes across as much of an uncaring sociopath as the criminals he is chasing or "putting into traction". As expected, Waylon is confused and disgusted by all this, even wishing his alcoholic aunt drowned him to death as a child. The rogues in the story are mostly played for laughs or shocks, but those moments mainly work for me because of how dry the humor is during the interactions.
