This is a miniseries worth reading and re-reading just to catch everything you missed the first time around.A bit more violent than your typical Batman story but has some aspects of Indiana Jones/Pulp Fiction. The reveals might not be as earth-shattering as you think, but they serve the story and are satisfyingly unsatisfying in a way that feels appropriate. Despite the beautiful, incredibly sexy, and energetic art by veteran superstar artist David Marquez (a new collaborator with King), the message of this miniseries is much, much more nihilistic than the messages of both his main Batman run and his Batman/Catwoman run, both of which try to show the meaning and help that love and family can bring to a life of trauma (A small link between Catwoman and the Joker early in the chronology of the run provides an Easter egg for fans of King’s Batman/Catwoman series, which shows that relationship developing throughout their lifetimes. A latecomer to comics - I started reading Bruce Wayne: Murderer, Birds of Prey, Hush, and War Games in college.

King juggles the cast of characters well, keeping everyone true to their motivations, and readers entertained throughout. The Help and Batman team up reluctantly to chase Catwoman and Riddler but cannot stop a complete bloodbath when the US Government forces meet with hundreds of Penguin’s hired goons, leading to well over a hundred murders. But here both Marquez and King portray a Batman that lives up to the original concept of someone who has mastered every human skill.The action is dynamic, the shadows loom large, and Batman has all the grace and presence of an MMA fighter turned olympic gymnast.
