About this deal

In short, fine book for a climber obsessed with climbing culture, but I’d recommend watching all the Sender Films movies instead (Reel Rock series, Valley Uprising, Free Solo, etc). Alex Honnold comes closer to offering this intangible quality than any other sportsman has in any autobiography I’ve yet read. Our editorial team curates these reading lists by consolidating all verified mentions and recommendations from Alex Honnold. Alex says: "I read Jim’s books because I once saw a quote where Tommy Caldwell said that Jim was his favorite author. Indeed, there's a very brief point where the story gets weird, and one reviewer has fixated on that strange passage, reading the rest of the book in light of the gendered elements of this fleeting moment in the narrative.

Alone on the Wall reveals him to be an utterly unique and extremely appealing young man’ - Jon Krakauer, bestselling author of Into the Wild. That said, if I was a climber who didn’t know about all of his exploits it would be a lot more interesting.A veteran of the North Face climbing team and contributor to National Geographic, Synnott weaves in his own amateur and professional experiences with poignant insight and wit. Don't put it down too often otherwise you might not pick it up again, but overall I'm glad I read it. He’s painfully aware of the state of the world, and funnels much of his fortune into environmental and social projects.

In the climbing community he is highly respected, and regarded as one of the greats, both as a person, and as a climber. Alex says: "A good reminder that there are 1 billion people on earth without access to power and that we should be doing something about it. I was surprised by how much the book made me look deeper into those ideas and view the sport of rock climbing in a completely new light. On June 3, 2017, he made the first free solo ascent of El Capitan, completing the 2,900-foot (884m) route Freerider (5.They completed the approximately 3,000-foot (914m) route in 1:58:07, becoming the first climbers to complete it in under two hours.

There are awkward passages about his love life, and his dynamic with older mentors, like Mark Synnott, that seem forced, like the editors were demanding something interesting to add to the story.Alex says: "I actually think of this book more than I expected to when I first read it - the idea of our random extra spaces (think highway medians) being nature really sunk in. There's a World of books to choose from such as: Children's Books, Range includes Baby Books (0-3), Books for Toddlers (3-5), Early Readers (5-7), Childrens Story books (7-11), Young Teens (11-14), Young Adults (14-16) and Childrens Educational Books. I did get to meet him briefly this past summer at a tradeshow, and got an autograph for a teenage co-worker of mine. With many great places to climb within the scope of northern California, Honnold couldn’t see the prospects of an engineering degree from Cal outweighing the chance to spend limitless time pursuing climbing, so he dropped out of one of the most-respected of American universities and set off on the road in a old van which would become his home and base of operations as he encountered climbing routes which challenged even the most experienced and hardy of veteran climbers. Therefore, writing an entire book that can appeal to both the rock climber who admires Honnold and the casual reader is a daunting task, but Honnold and Roberts have pulled it off as well as anyone could hope. He does the same in this book, writing about his own life while weaving in the history and evolution of the sport of rock-climbing, its culture, and the celebrities of the sport, including Alex. This book is worthwhile—not only for rock climbers or those who spend ample time out of doors, but for anyone keen on knowing how someone who has carved out for himself a rather unique . Alex's parents offered encouragement, and high standards, but little affection: "I never got hugged.
