She’s In CTRL: How women can take back tech – to communicate, investigate, problem-solve, broker deals and protect themselves in a digital world

She draws on her own experience and the stories of other pioneers and innovators who have, against the odds, transformed technology. It was about me being able to logically apply things I had seen and learned about databases, the Web, or about whatever maths we had looked at that week in school. That creativity is what drew me to STEM – it was a way to understand the world. Where did your motivation to start Stemettes come from? We’re also calling on the Department for Education to ensure that herstory is included in the national STEM curriculum. We’ve been involved in parent groups, exam boards – we’re bringing forward everyone this matters to. It was spurred by a letter a member of our youth board wrote to the DfE. Everyone is really behind this and getting on board, so that’s been the majority of the work this year. It was a lot of fun. I’m the eldest of five, so there were seven of us in one house – which meant there was never anywhere you could go to be by yourself. We did everything together. We ate together and watched TV together. From the outside, it probably seemed fast-paced, but on the inside, it wasn’t like that – it was good times. There was a keynote at the conference and this woman explained how in the US, the number of women engaging in tech had been in freefall over the last decade. I did more research into it and realised this has implications for us economically, ethically, politically and societally. I wanted to do something about it for my unborn children – if I ever have daughters, I want them to know STEM is an option for them. It means our technology is derived from the gender, nationality and beliefs of a section of society whose lived experience may not chime with our own. I’m constantly learning how to manage, how to hire, how to deal with partners. At Stemettes we’re now adding a charity side, so figuring out how to work with donors will be another massively different kind of relationship. With only 17% of managers saying they would feel very confident supporting a bereaved line report, there’s a clear need for better guidance around having grief conversations at work. Ultimately, imagination is about new and unreal things; technology is about making the unreal real. Taking control of technology doesn’t always mean creating the new from scratch – it can also mean adding something new to what already exists. Ideas can be planted in the imagination from all kinds of sources, but your experiences are a key component of what you imagine – your upbringing, your formative experiences and your day-to-day reality combine with your values and priorities.
