About this deal

I got the audio version, which was actually two treats in one because the narrator has a rather nice Scottish accent. The local team assigned to him are for the most part good at their jobs and work with him cooperatively to find the kidnapper and save the child.

They feel like people I know already, in a way that often takes several books to achieve in other series. The descriptions of the landscape, the weather, and the small-town atmosphere serve to create a sense of place that is both eerie and familiar. When the bloody remains of a missing gamekeeper’s dog are discovered on the moors, it soon becomes clear to DCI Harry Grimm and his team that this was no wild animal attack. Jack Logan and his team know that it is not the work of a monster, but a killer has committed the brutal crime.

The "Scottishness" of DCI Logan and his fellow "polis", was entertaining and Logan's get up and go attitude was refreshing. From the moment I opened the front cover until the moment I finished reading the last word on the last page, I was completely under the book’s spell.

But when the book is a police procedural, I like more of the real world and how things are really done to seep in the novel. In this book DCI Jack Logan is asked to help find a missing boy, who was taken whilst out in the woods.

But, he felt quite helpless in that terrifying moment and the thought of his daughter being abducted by someone stuck in his mind several weeks, eventually inspiring him to use it in his debut novel. I was also pleasantly surprised by some of the wit and humour throughout as I was not expecting it but it contrasted with the dark, disturbing narrative perfectly. Love the area, love the camaraderie of Logans team and then Hoon in his own series but l don’t think l have laughed so much in ages and l mean side splitting and tears rolling.Since then I have located all the Jack Logan books except for the last 3 but I will track them down.

It’s a race against time to figure out what’s going on if there’s any chance to save the missing boy. You also don't learn anything about him having an ex-wife, not to mention a daughter he doesn't see (or seem to know anything about). The irony was that although the story centered on him clearing himself of the accusation that he had sent the wrong person to prison years ago, his whole behavior suggested he was the kind of cop who might be guilty of such a charge. An antagonist with a past that drives him to commit the crimes, even eliciting some understanding of the motivation? DCI Jack Logan is a complex and well-rounded character who is facing his own demons as he investigates the murders. As soon as I started to read that was it, I was suddenly wide awake again and I ended up reading into the wee small hours of the morning. This is a cleverly plotted, chilling and unpredictable read, but be warned there is horrendous cruelty to cats, and although it certainly fits with the character of the perpetrator it may trigger some people.
