Ancient Dubrovnik

Island hop in South Croatia and visit the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik

For a holiday with breath-taking coastlines, idyllic beaches and quiet old cities brimming with culture, visit Croatia. Why not try a get-a-way with a difference and discover the alluring beauty of the Southern Croatian coastline.

Fly into Dubrovnik and wile away a few days in the small but exquisitely preserved old town. From here take a gentle boat ride to one of the halcyon islands that pepper the Adriatic Sea just miles from the mainland.

Take a short taxi drive from the airport and admire the rocky coastline where the sky melts into the turquoise sea and look out for Dubrovnik's walled city embedded on the elevated shoreline. The old city walls encompass the mini fairy-tale centre with its alabaster shimmering floors and pristine buildings. You can easily spend a week here, wandering the cobbled streets, admiring the architecture, shopping, dining and visiting the myriad of museums. Meandering along the walls which stretch 2km around the city offers stunning azure vistas and the ancient turrets provide unique lookout points. Or get delightfully lost in the winding back-streets and seek out the tiny shops selling authentic Croatian jewellery and clothes.

This is a city steeped in history with architecture that speaks of the wonders and atrocities the country has experienced. The baroque Cathedral built in the 18th century contains an awe-inspiring treasury and relics of Saint Blaise. The impressive Monastery resembling a fortress on the outside holds an art museum and Gothic-Romanesque church within.

At night the city transforms and the buoyant atmosphere is contagious. Choose from the vast array of gorgeous restaurants lining the streets where you can tuck into traditional Croatian cuisine. The rest of the evening can be spent at the tentatively lit romantic harbour or sipping on wine listening to the free live music played in many of the squares.

Escape to utter tranquillity and take a trip to one of the peacefully idyllic islands, each of which are car free and diminutively populated. Relax in a sequestered hotel or swim in the lightly pebbled warm waters of the unpolluted beaches. The clear cobalt sea, singing cicadas and clusters of fragrant pine trees provide a serene backdrop to the placid island surroundings. Pick from Mljet, Lopud, Lokram or Korcula.

Stray off the well-trodden sands of France or Spain and uncover the sanguine city of Dubrovnik and the enchanting islands that edge its waters. This holiday is perfect for those who love sparkling beaches to relax on, an abundance of culture and a little adventure. Plan your trip to this beautiful country and insure your stay runs smoothly
