How to use the "Discussion" section of OverFiftiesFriends (left menu):

The Discussion section of Over Fifties Friends is where our members interract. Over 50s take part in and create forum disucssions, chat, and write and comment on Blogs. Use the discussion media to discuss possible activities and clubs or just have a chat with other seniors. See the individual sections below, as laid out in the left menu of the site, for more information on how to use them.

Forum - The OverFiftiesFriends Forum is full of interesting discussions from our over 50s members. To view a forum click on its heading in orange. You then get a list of topics within that forum. You can click on a topic to read it, or you can click in the top right to create a New Topic. Clicking on a topic heading takes you to that thread, or "discussion". The text, or "post" from the person who created the topic is at the top of the page, and then any replies follow underneath. If you read the topic thread and wish to reply, click on Post Reply in the top right or bottom right of that page. When you add your reply, or "post", you can format your text like you would in Microsoft Word, you can add an image and you can add links.

Adding an image to your forum post: Having clicked on "Post Reply", you will see a row of "tools" above the text box. Click on the small image with mountains and the sun (Insert/Edit image). Here you can insert images from various sources. To use an image on your computer, click on the tab "Upload". Then click on "Browse". A window will come up allowing you to choose an image from anywhere on your computer. Find the image you want and double click it. Then click the button "Send to server". Then click on OK. Click OK again and your image will be included in your forum post. Click "Save" under the text box to post it.

Adding a link to your forum post: In the text of your forum post, you can add links to other Web sites, articles etc. Either just write in the link fully (www.nameofthelink.com), or if you want to use text such as "click here to go to...", select the text and click on the tool with a picture of a chain link (Insert/Edit link). Here, you can put in the Web address (URL) that you want the text to link to. If you want the link to open in a new window, click on the "Target" tab and select target "New Window". Click OK. Click "Save" under the text box to post it. You can also make an image link to another site, by clicking the image (once you have inserted it, as above) and following the same process.

Chat - The Chat link takes you to the fantastic Over Fifties Friends custom chat room! To enter the chat room and chat with other over 50s in the UK, click on the image. Under the image, you will see a list of users currently in the chat room and what room they are in. There are also some guidelines and instructions on that page.

Using the chat room:  Once you are in the chat room, you will see three main boxes. The large square box is where the chat dialogue appears. The long box to the right shows the list of rooms and the users in those rooms. The small box at the bottom is where you type your messages to show up in the chat room you are in. Above the large main window, there is a drop down menu that allows you to change room. Next to that is a button for making a new room (Add a room). To create your own room, click on this, then give your room a name and decide if it should be public or private. You can also select a password if you want the room to be password protected. Click on "Create" to make your room available. To type a message to the chat room (and all the users in it), click and write in the small box at the bottom, then press Return or click on the Send button to the right. The tools above this box allow you to: show other users if you are "Here", "Busy" or "Away" or will "BRB" (Be Right Back); to change themes, sound effects and text type (Options); to change your text colour; to save the chat; to go to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs); to use "smiley faces" (fun!); and use bold and italics. Please always demonstrate respect for other users in the chat room.

Blogs - Blogging, or keeping a "Web log" is growing at a phenomenal rate. Here on Over Fifties Friends, you can read others' Blogs and create your own. Let's try to make our community the best portal for over 50s Blogs online. To read the Blogs, just click on a category in the list. The Blogs are listed by date and you can see who has created them. Click a Blog title to read it. You can then rate the Blog, read the comments or make your own comments by following the links.

My Blogs - Clicking on the "My Blogs" links enables you to manage the Blogs you have created on Over Fifties Friends. You can remove or edit any of the Blog entries and comments you have made here.

Create New Blog - If you feel like becoming a Silver Blogger, this is the place to start. Creating your Blog is simple: Just click this link then fill in the title (e.g. My Travels) and select a category from the list. Then you need to add the content of your Blog. Use the "My Blogs" link (above) to add content to your Blogs (essentially online diaries) as often as you wish. The tools above the box for entering text are similar to those found in Microsoft Word. However, with a Blog, it's good to add as much visual content and links to other useful sites, videos and articles as possible. So try to use the tools for adding images and links:

Adding an image to your Blog: Click on the small image with mountains and the sun (Insert/Edit image).

Adding a link to your forum post: Either just write in the link fully (www.nameofthelink.com), or if you want to use text such as "click here to go to..." or "View the video here...", select the text and click on the tool with a picture of a chain link (Insert/Edit link).
