About this deal

There have been a number of books I read five years ago when my love for romance really sparked that are absolutely dreadful on the reread.

The details of Eve’s life, revealed slowly and in such a way that it flowed naturally with her own maturation was something new to read. When they were struggling financially, Light a Penny Candle was published, which made her an overnight success. There are friends in Knockglen, such as the unconventional pairing of Fonsie and Clodagh who set the townsfolk into a tizzy with their modern ways. I like the movie but as always the book is more fulfilling as it lends itself to the elabirstion, the depiction of the small town and its people, the characters and their relationship. On their first day at University College, the inseparable pair are thrown together with fellow students: beautiful but selfish Nan Mahon and the handsome Jack Foley. This then makes Benny the perfect character to draw us in to this story of a young, gauche girl trying to navigate the new and intimidating world of university, far away from home and all the security she has known.

As we are told, this is in keeping with developments in education in the United Kingdom and takes into account children’s rights. Unfortunately, what Nan doesn’t realize is that although they have been putting up appearances, Simon’s family is no longer very wealthy.

At one point, they are dressed in a way they think is quietly dignified and are refused service at the hotel bar for being inappropriate. Benny never tells them that this broke her heart instead she smiles through the pain and pretends excitement. Setting out for university in Dublin - although poor Benny has to come home on the bus every night - the girls' stories become entwined with that of beautiful, ambitious Nan Mahon and college heartthrob Jack Foley. Leaving aside the hot debate about the use of this intentionally derogatory term for books that are enjoyed by millions of women – and men – the world over, to label her work as chicklit is to fundamentally misunderstand it.

A time when the younger generation were pulling the older generation kicking and screaming into the ‘racier’ 1950’s. But heartbreak and betrayal would bring the worlds of Knockglen and Dublin into explosive collision. The two have grown up together in the fictional town of Knockglen, and although they are very close, their family lives are polar opposites. On her 10th birthday, she is expecting a princess party dress to transform her but instead she gets a ‘sturdy, hard wearing outfit’ that her parents have finished off with matching shoes and handbag. In a way, I am more angry at the fact this chapter happened, since it barely served as a good enough introduction to the created town of Knockglen, and the later development (or lack there of) in the future characters of Benny and Eve. Among the themes the novel explores are happiness, friendship and love, commerce, and small-town Irish mores. Building respectful teams of support around an individual, tapping into that child’s peer group is an extremely powerful way of promoting change and insights for all involved. Benny—the only child, yearning to break free from her adoring parents…Eve—the orphaned offspring of a convent handyman and a rebellious blueblood, abandoned by her mother’s wealthy family to be raised by nuns.

The film is fluff (although enjoyable enough if you don't compare it to the book) but the novel is realistic, enjoyable and made me both laugh and cry. Not without reason is Binchy (Evening Class; Circle of Friends) most popular for her novels, as this unimpressive collection of short stories linked by the theme of travel-and-learn indicates. This book focuses on Benny and best friend Eve leaving their small, country town to attend college in Dublin.

Eventually, Benny grows from being a sheltered 10 year old to being a sheltered 19/20 year old about to attend a Dublin university. Bitter middle aged widower who just needs a little lovin'," and "Beautiful woman who provides said lovin'. It widened at Dublin, at the university where Benny and Eve met beautiful Nan Mahlon and Jack Foley, a doctor’s handsome son. As in the first edition, the technique is clearly described, there are many practical examples and all of the original summary sheets (for parents, teachers and other professionals) are included. an approach to enhancing the inclusion, in a mainstream setting, of any young person (known as the ‘focus child’), who is experiencing difficulties in school because of a disability, a personal crisis or his or her challenging behaviour towards others.
