Over-50s locked out of employment, charity warns

The number of unemployed over-50s out of work for more than a year is significantly higher than the national average, figures published this week (September 12th) showed.

Although 35% of people out of employment have been so for more than 12 months, this figure rises to 41% of women and almost 50% for men over the age of 50, Age UK warned.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics also showed a 0.5% rise in overall employment in the last quarter - with the news less comforting for older workers.

As a result, the charity is calling on the government and employers to promote the skills and experience of older workers and to take steps to prevent age discrimination in recruitment.

"Older people in the UK who find themselves out of work are increasingly being frozen out of the labour market with limited hope of finding a job," Michelle Mitchell, Age UK's Charity Director General, said.
