About this deal

These images ask not so much for our emotional response as our participation with a multifaceted narrative that is not contained within any one layer. Over the past century, Cuban music has produced a seemingly endless variety of styles―rumba, mambo, son, salsa―at a dizzyingly fast rate.

The first ever book about Cuban record sleeve design, compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker, Cuba: Music and Revolution , when Cuba’s Special Period, brought about by the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the withdrawal of Russia’s financial support for the Cuban government, led to the demise of vinyl-record manufacturing in Cuba.

Renato Cisneros digs into his own family history to understand and demystify the figure of ‘El Gaucho’: the controversial Secretary during the regime of Francisco Morales Bermúdez and, shortly after, the country’s Minister of War. After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the new government closed American-owned nightclubs and consolidated the island’s recording industry under a state-run monopoly. The green walls the red chair are a compositionally wonderful pairing, the frame within a frame of the glassless window isolates the narrative outside. A note from FRAMES: if you have a forthcoming or recently published book of photography, please let us know. A penetrating analysis of the work of one of the most influential painters in the history of modern art by one of the world’s most respected art historians.

With a historical gazetteer, chronology of major events, index, bibliography and historical and contemporary maps, this book is an invaluable companion to students or visitors to the island. And we also have in the window the reflection of what is behind the photographer – trees and cars and street signs. As a Senior Curator at Tate, Dr Chris Stephens knew Smith well, and he contributes a wide-ranging introduction to Smith’s art and life. Clark addresses this strangeness head-on, examining the art of Pissarro, Matisse and others in relation to it. Other images range from New York City to Israel to Belgium to Paris to Tokyo, Istanbul, Madrid, the Dominican Republic, Tunis.

Another image from is from Madrid in 1993 and appears to be taken outside a subway car, through a sheet of glass to a man and a woman sitting inside the car.

A collection of seventy-five images that connect one realm with the next, this volume shows that beyond the marvelous colorist that he is, Gruyaert’s images also depict a photographer’s vision of the world.

Tipping over into photography, dissolving the boundaries between exterior and interior spaces, closed world or open world, forgetting oneself in a suspended time.If These Apples Should Fall: Cezanne and the Present looks back on Cezanne from a moment – our own – when such judgments may seem to need justifying. Most often, there is some version of a window that separates the scene, creates dissonance, and includes reflections that bring in unexpected content. A familiar theme, but one that, across the generations, can occasionally unearth something rather powerful.
