The book On Becoming Babywise is one of those controversial volumes. Some parents love and swear by this book, and others strongly disagree. This is easy to understand, once you know the gist of the book. Essentially, Babywise advocates for letting your baby cry it out from a pretty young age. Read the title, and you don't need to read the book. Trite, repetitive, and incredibly simplistic, Rath's new book made me want to sit on the couch and stuff my face with Oreos. I think there were some healthy nuggets of truth throughout, but I found myself getting annoyed and discouraged more than I found myself feeling motivated or compelled to be healthier. Each chapter includes three findings and concludes with three ideas for how you can apply these discoveries in your life. The author suggests that the readers use the resources in this book to start a 30-day challenge to learn new and healthier habits.What an utterly useless book! I guess I should've just read the title and stopped. Yes, I know that eating 'right' is important. So is sleeping right and moving right. Either this book is completely hollow and a repitition of itself many times over, or I am incredibly knowledgable about this topic. Okay, so now you’re wondering what this eat play sleep routine is all about, right? In short, it’s exactly how it sounds. Baby eats, has some sort of play time and only after that will they sleep. For some, this routine might feel like more work at first. After all, there’s no better relief than a baby falling asleep after a full feed. The author believes the right choices over time will greatly improve our odds for a long and healthy life. The problem is, we can't see the threat small daily decisions pose in the moment. Small decisions about how you eat, move, and sleep count more than you think. After eating just one poor meal, the arteries of participants in this group dilated 24 percent less than their original state. This study suggests that every meal influences your body's ability to function properly." (p. 198, emphasis the author's) While I can say with confidence it was my least favorite part, I can also say it’s manageable if you lean into one thing: a routine. Maybe you’re here looking for a basic routine, or maybe you’re in the throes of sleep deprivation looking for a way out.
