About this deal

At the beginning of the Blitz, the bombing of London by the German military, in 1940, the government requisitioned the nearly completed station to be used as an overnight shelter during the ongoing air raids. They begin a courtship, and she finds solace in small moments like going to the cinema and getting dressed up for a dance. The station was vast, with 5,000 bunks, a theater and library, a doctor’s quarters, a makeshift café, and additional space in the tunnels. Nineteen Steps is an eye-opening and heartbreaking account of life during World War II, focusing on the tragedy that was the Bethnal Green tube disaster.

Millie Bobby Brown is an actress and producer best known for playing Eleven in the Netflix hit series Stranger Things . She said that a lot of the criticism came down to “jealousy”, “ageism” and “sexism” – “I can’t think of one man who has had this level of criticism,” she added. In this remarkable debut, Brown brings to life an unfamiliar--and shocking--tragedy that took place during World War II in London's East End. So thank goodness Brown’s Nanny Ruth, who was a survivor of the crush, told her granddaughter what she remembered.

Other notable ghostwritten celebrity titles include Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare, which was written by JR Moehringer. In response to a now-deleted tweet by Waterstones promoting the book, many Twitter users criticised Brown. I truly did not expect some of the more tragic twists in her personal story - often in similar stories they happen to secondary characters rather than primary characters - and by the time you get to part three, you'll be entirely wrung out. You might open Nineteen Steps for the celebrity name, but stick with it for the history of an under-recognized event of World War II.

The closest air raid shelter is the disused Bethnal Green Tube station, where many people were able to comfortably stay the night. She adores her younger siblings and her best friend, who lives next door, and she dreams of traveling the world. I don't know how to rate this, so I will forget whose name is on the cover and rate it based on the story. This book made me think of my grandparents and great grandparents, who sadly had to go through so many wars and who probably felt similar feelings as described in this book. The story is so emotional and raw; you really feel the loss and the grief that main character, Nellie Morris experiences and at times, it was hard to stop my eyes from tearing up.

This highly charged historical romance offers intimate insight into WWII London and the challenges of overcoming loss. This book teaches the reader about a tragic event that happened during the war in a really thoughtful way, you really care for the characters and the heartbreak they feel - I couldn't put it down! Most locals preferred it to other nearby shelters because there was such a sense of community spirit.
