According to the biblical narrative, Jezebel, along with her husband, instituted the worship of Baal and Asherah on a national scale. In addition, she violently purged the prophets of Yahweh from Israel, damaging the reputation of the Omride dynasty. [5] [6] [7] [8] For these offences, Jezebel was thrown from a window to her death. Her corpse was trampled by Jehu's horse and then eaten by stray dogs, just as the prophet Elijah had prophesied.( 2 Kings 9:33–37) According to Geoffrey Bromiley, the depiction of Jezebel as "the incarnation of Canaanite cultic and political practices, detested by Israelite prophets and loyalists, has given her a literary life far beyond the existence of a ninth-century Tyrian princess." [15]For some reason, Naslund chose to focus on the literati and cognoscenti of the era instead of simply continuing to present the story of this remarkable woman. This king of Israel was so evil that Elijah the prophet prophesied the extermination of him and his entire family. When he repented, however, God let him live and postponed the punishment on his posterity (1Kings 21:17 - 29). Jezebel experienced no such repentance like her husband. The Eternal proclaimed that after her death the dogs would fight to eat her flesh by Jezreel's wall (1Kings 21:23). The name Jezebel is a girl's name meaning “unexalted” and is of Hebrew origin. There may be two women named Jezebel in the Bible. The famous Jezebel is the notorious wife of Ahab, king of Israel in the Old Testament. Somewhat more problematic is the extent to which that world is strewn with benevolence toward her. Ahab thinks of her as As soon as Ahab got word of Naboth’s death, he went to take possession of the vineyard. As the Lord instructed the prophet, Elijah came out of the wilderness to meet Ahab at the vineyard and confronted him about Jezebel’s conspiracy against Naboth as well as Ahab’s sinful actions that were causing Israel to sin. The pain was hard, tight and dark within me. I lay still except for my involuntary shivering and the bedding shivering on its woven ropes in return. The fire had fallen to ash; the last ember eye had closed.

That second homecoming brought him home dismasted, one-legged, raging; yet he would go forth again to war upon the deep. The eunuchs were used as servants to women of royalty. Jezebel was likely very cruel to them and therefore did not earn any favor among them. Then the eunuchs threw Jezebel out of the window and her body was trampled by horses and consumed by dogs, just as Elijah had prophecized. Jezebel is the Anglicized transliteration of the Hebrew איזבל‎ ʾIzeḇel. The Oxford Guide to People & Places of the Bible states that the name is "best understood as meaning 'Where is the Lord?'" ( Hebrew: אֵיזֶה בַּעַל, romanized: ʾēze baʿal), a ritual cry from worship ceremonies in honor of Baal during periods of the year when the god was considered to be in the underworld.
